SUD 777: THE WINNERS and LOSERS FROM THIS TOP MEXICO CITY RESTAURANT

The Cost - $70 per person.

The Atmosphere – Because Sud 777 isn’t in the middle of the hustle and bustle of one of Mexico City’s jam packed neighborhoods, they have a bit of room to work with and they took full advantage of it. A beautiful restaurant with a lot of stone and wood features and design, there is also a live tree and live plans throughout the various dining spaces. Definitely a contemporary and chic vibe for a restaurant serving contemporary Mexican cuisine.

During my time in Mexico City I made sure to visit the local restaurants on The World’s 50 Best List of restaurants in Latin America that I had not been to. Sud 777, currently ranked number 17, was first up.

The Order - I went a little crazy here and ordered quite a bit of food for two diners. I started with Grilled Octopus and followed it with Burrata in Celery Salsa, Beet Salad with a Beet and Coffee Reduction, Tamale Soup with Beans and Molé Negro, Duck Breast in a Yellow Molé, Glazed Pork Rib and,for dessert, a Smoked Banana with Goat Cheese Ice Cream and Liquid Marshmallow along with a CrémeBrûlée with Blue Cheese Ice Cream. Also, 2 Tamarind Margaritas.

The Phenomenal - The beet salad was absolutely incredible. I was scared to order it because of the sound of a coffee reduction in a salad but the reduction made it one of the most spectacular salads I’ve ever eaten. The brussels sprout shavings were also a really nice addition.

The Great - The duck breast was lovely and it came with a very nice sweet potato purée. The pork rib was very tasty and though the homemade applesauce was a bit bland, the truffle mashed potatoes it came with were amazing. The grilled octopus was excellent and I loved that it was one, large tentacle instead of small bits and parts.

The Good - The margaritas, the smoked banana and the burrata. The salsa on the burrata was different and a fun change on the typical dish. The margaritas and the smoked banana were solid but not rave-worthy.

The Bad - I had high expectations for the tamale soup but it was a major let down. The crémebrûlée itself was nicely done but the combo with blue cheese ice cream was a miss. The cocktail menu was just a bunch of classic cocktails, nothing interesting.

The Verdict - A very good value when you find those phenomenal and great dishes. Make sure you get the beet salad if it is available!
