RANKED: COPPER TOP COFFEE AND DONUTS’ DOZEN

The Cost - $20

On some Sunday mornings I crave an extravagant, boozy brunch; on others, I just want an amazing donut. This Sunday I wanted the latter so I got a dozen of them from Copper Top Coffee and Donuts in Hillcrest and began the challenging process of attempting to rank them from 1 to 12.

The Order - A dozen donuts.

The Ranking

1. French Toast - Homemade maple frosting, powdered sugar, cinnamon. The maple frosting is to die for. The winner by a wide margin!
2. Copper Top - With salted caramel, an espresso glaze, maple frosting and espresso grinds, this donut is unique and delicious.
3. Dirt Pile - Homemade vanilla frosting and crushed Oreos. The frosting is brilliant!
4. The 5-O - Maple frosting, bacon. The maple frosting is clearly the common thread in today’s winners.
5. Everything Nice - Bananas, Nutella, granola. I thought it was good but it didn’t blow me away.
6. Celebration - Raspberry jam, vanilla frosting, powdered
sugar. Middle of the pack but I enjoyed it.
7. 16 Candles - White chocolate, coconut, sprinkles. The coconut was great.
8. Sugar and Spice - Just cinnamon and sugar. Nice flavor but too dry to enjoy.
9. School Lunch - Tasted exactly like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich - I just don’t want my donut tasting like a PB&J.
10. Tortoise - Salted caramel, chocolate and walnuts sounded great but I just wasn’t a huge fan.
11. Bear Claw - Bear claws are normally one of my faves but this one is non-traditional. With honey and almonds, it tasted too healthy.
12. Date Night - Raspberry jam, chocolate, chocolate chunks. This is something I rarely ever say: there was too much chocolate. Avoid this one.

The Verdict - Copper Top’s donuts are good but the flavors are really hit or miss. For maximum enjoyment, stick with the donuts that have their homemade frostings!
