BURT AND MAX’S: NEW AMERICAN FARE IN AN UPSCALE CASUAL RESTAURANT IN DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA

The Cost -$42

The Atmosphere – Located in Delray Marketplace in Delray Beach, Florida, Burt & Max’s décor features a fire pit outside and a lot of natural finishes on the inside, including a very large bar made out of a single slab of wood. The restaurant is on the casual side (it is Florida after all) so there isn’t a need to dress up and non-athletic shorts are fine to wear. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating and can get busy so a reservation, especially for weekend nights, is a good idea.

Part of the Rapoport Restaurant Group, a South Florida company that owns other restaurants such as Prezzo, Decor84, and Pagoda Kitchen, Burt & Max’s opened its doors in 2013. The restaurant serves New American cuisine, and its menu is made up of some shareable plates as well as individual-sized main courses in addition to pizzas that are fired up inside of its large brick oven.

The Order – Crispy Brussel Sprouts and the Stuffed Chicken Breast.

The Great – The Crispy Brussel Sprouts, an appetizer-sized bowl of Brussel sprouts with a pepper jam glaze, pancetta, and goat cheese on top, was a really nice start to the meal. The Brussels sprouts were done nicely and the chunks of pancetta inside were of a good enough size and strong enough flavor to make a very nice impact on most bites. The goat cheese was heavily sprinkled on top of the dish while the pepper jam glaze gave the Brussels sprouts almost a caramelized sweetness and texture. This is a dish I would definitely order again and is a very shareable option.

The Good – The Stuffed Chicken Breast was a good-sized portion of chicken stuffed with aged gruyère over sweet potatoes and mushrooms. The chicken itself was fine but I was disappointed with the small amount of cheese stuffed inside. The sauce that it came in, however, was very nice and I wished there was more of it. I also really enjoyed the sweet potato and mushroom medley under the chicken and thought it was an excellent and tasty way to compliment the protein.

The Verdict – While Burt & Max’s isn’t cheap by any means, it does offer diners an upscale setting in which to enjoy the restaurant’s take on New American cuisine. It isn’t the best food in town, but if you are looking for a nice, comfortable setting for a dinner with friends or family where everyone can easily find something to eat on the menu, Burt & Max’s is not a bad choice.
